Maximum Inspiratory Pressure (MIP) and Maximal Expiratory Pressure (MEP) testing measures the strength of the muscles you use to breathe in and breathe out. These tests provide helpful information about the strength and function of your respiratory muscles, which play an important role in breathing, coughing, and overall lung health.

MIP and MEP testing may be recommended when your doctor wants to better understand symptoms such as breathing weakness, difficulty taking deep breaths, or unexplained shortness of breath. These measurements may also be used alongside pulmonary function testing to provide a more complete picture of your breathing.

Why Your Doctor May Order MIP / MEP Testing

Your doctor may request respiratory muscle strength testing to help:

• Assess the strength of the muscles used for breathing
• Investigate symptoms such as breathing weakness or unexplained shortness of breath
• Evaluate certain neuromuscular or respiratory conditions
• Monitor respiratory muscle function over time
• Provide additional information alongside pulmonary function testing

What to Expect During the Test

MIP and MEP testing is done while you are seated and comfortable. You will breathe through a mouthpiece while following simple instructions from our staff. For both measurements, you will be asked to perform a short, maximal breathing effort against gentle resistance — either breathing in strongly for MIP or blowing out strongly for MEP.

Each effort lasts only a few seconds and is usually repeated several times to ensure the results are consistent. Short rest periods are provided between efforts so you can recover comfortably. Our team will guide you through each step and offer encouragement throughout the test.
