Spirometry is a simple breathing test that measures how much air you can move in and out of your lungs, and how quickly you can blow it out. It helps your doctor better understand your breathing symptoms and can be an important tool in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as asthma and COPD.
In some cases, spirometry is done before and after a bronchodilator (puffer). This helps show whether your airways open up with medication. Seeing how your lungs respond can help your doctor confirm a diagnosis and ensure your treatment is giving you the best possible support in your daily life.
Why it’s ordered
Spirometry may be ordered to help your doctor better understand symptoms such as cough, wheezing, chest tightness, or shortness of breath. It is commonly used when asthma or COPD is being considered, and it can also help guide treatment decisions over time. Spirometry may also be used to establish a baseline of your lung function, so changes can be monitored over time.
What to expect
Spirometry is done while you are seated and comfortable. You may wear a soft nose clip so all breathing goes through the mouthpiece. You’ll be guided to take a deep breath in, then blow out hard and fast, continuing until your lungs feel completely empty. The test is repeated several times, which is completely normal and helps ensure your results are consistent. If bronchodilator testing is required, you may be given a puffer during your appointment and the test will be repeated afterward so we can compare the results.
